Meet John, one of our Frontend Engineers. John joined us back in January 2025.
Why did you choose to work in a start-up?
I was looking for a company where I could take on more responsibility and have a greater impact. A start-up felt like the right fit. Focusing with a smaller group of people on one collective goal is something I found a lot more rewarding than in some of my previous roles.
What were you doing before you joined Acre?
I had recently graduated from university and was working as a software engineer at a consulting firm.
What does your typical day working at Acre look like?
If I'm working in the office, the day would definitely start with catching up with everyone quickly by the coffee machine before heading back to a desk to recap my work from the day before, then meeting with my team for standup. After standup, it really depends on what I am currently working on. It could be anything from implementing new features, fixing bugs, or working with the design and product teams to help plan new front-end features. The day is normally broken up with lunch, where I'll normally tag along with whoever else is in the office for a quick walk.
What is the best part of your job?
For me, the best part of my job is definitely working with and learning from everyone here at Acre. In the short time I have been here, the guidance I have received has helped me develop and improve very quickly. Everyone is friendly and more than happy to take time to help each other solve problems.
What is your favourite place to grab lunch near the office?
It's hard to choose. The office is surrounded by a lot of great lunch places and food markets. For me, it's probably a toss-up between the self-proclaimed "best katsu box in town," which you can find at the market, or a sandwich shop that sells fresh sourdough sandwiches.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
A couple of my favourite things to do are climbing/bouldering and baking. I started climbing at university and have been hooked ever since. I love food, and baking means I get to enjoy more of it. I'll often find a new type of bread or dessert and give it a go at making it at home. I have also recently signed up for and am training for a marathon, though I can't say running is one of my favourite things to do just yet!
